Course Details: As family or professional caregivers, we all know how extremely stressful and overwhelming our task can be at times. But deep down, don’t we also know that it doesn’t need to be this way? As caregivers, we have the opportunity to experience how caring for others can also be one of the most joyful and meaningful experiences in life. The lessons that we learn, the bonds that we form, and the love that we share can be profoundly rewarding. So how can we increase the rewarding side of caregiving — the love, connection and personal growth — and reduce the stress, depression and fatigue? Again and again, clinical studies find that a couple of inner skills can really help: mindfulness and self-compassion. This course is designed to help you learn and experience the benefits of these simple yet life-changing skills.

In this course you will learn:

  • the essentials of effective mindfulness meditation
  • the common signs and pitfalls of ineffective meditation
  • how to transform common distractions into support for meditation
  • how to establish a daily practice even with a full caregiver’s schedule
  • how to develop the willpower and motivation to stick with it
  • effective techniques for transforming your inner critic
  • powerful daily practices for experiencing more self-compassion
  • practices for feeling more patience, love and compassion for others
  • the one simple key to working with any painful emotion
  • how common caregiver stressors can be turned into support for mindfulness
  • unique ways to bring mindfulness into your caregiving activities

The Science Behind the Course: There has been a lot of press about the power of mindfulness in recent years, mostly due to the growing number of scientific studies showing the innumerable benefits meditation has to offer. For example, in one study, caregivers who were suffering from depression showed significantly lower levels of depressive symptoms and greater improvement in mental health and cognitive function after an 8 week meditation course. Of these participants, 65% showed a reduction of depressive symptoms by 50% (Geriatric Psychiatry, 2012 Mar 11).

In another study, health insurance statistics on over 2,000 people practicing meditation showed that meditators consistently had less than half the hospitalization than did other groups with comparable age, gender, profession, and insurance terms (Psychosomatic Medicine, 49: 493-507, 1987).

Studies are also finding that self-compassion is a powerful predictor of enhanced mental health over time (Gilbert & Proctor; NeV, Kirkpatrick, & Rude). People with higher levels of self-compassion experience less self-criticism, depression, anxiety, and perfectionism, and more life-satisfaction and social connectedness (NeV, 2003a).

Increased self-compassion has also been shown to lead to lower stress levels following participation in mindfulness-based stress-reduction programs (Shapiro, Astin, Bishop, & Cordova, 2005).

Testimonials: “The value of this class is immeasurable. I learned tools to help me in my most challenging moments (and even just regular moments), and Cayce and Matthew, two of the most loving teachers I have ever encountered, did a superb job explaining the concepts behind the tools we were learning. The classes were clear, engaging, incredibly informative, and their method of walking you through a meditation on the concept they were teaching was a very effective way of learning. If you are a caregiver of any sort, professional or otherwise, I would recommend this course as an ESSENTIAL part of your training.” — Cinnamon Schwendiman

“Thank you so much for everything, Matthew and Cayce! This has truly been such an amazing and transforming experience. I feel very lucky that I got to be a part of the class! I am now conscious of the fact that I have tools in my toolbox, and sometimes, I catch myself and actually transform that moment, which is pretty much a miracle I feel. I also find myself filling empty spaces with mindful meditations and it’s calming and feels nurturing. As one of the other participants said, ‘we won the lottery of meditation classes,’ and I couldn’t agree more. I will definitely be forwarding info to my caregiving friends and acquaintances.” — Sonja Lessley
